The 4-1 Centennial Colts took on the undefeated 4-0 George Brown College (GBC) Huskies on Saturday, November 12th, 2016. GBC when playing at home are almost impossible to beat. Coach Challenger and his coaching staff knew going in that their squad had to play a near perfect game to compete with the likes of the Huskies.
After the 1st quarter the Colts we're down 23-13 while fighting hard, however the Huskies had the run of the game. It was as to be expected in this typical crosstown rivalry game where both teams played hard and competed to their fullest, leaving everything on the court. As the game came to a close for the half the Colts managed to cut down the huskies lead George Brown 37 and Centennial 36. The team was invigorated to mount a comeback for the second half. By the end of the 3rd period GBC still remained on top 51-50 as both teams traded points for the quarter. The 4th quarter was a complete different story as the Colts played some good basketball applying more defensive pressure and attacking the stifling GBC defense. The Colts managed to outscore the Huskies 27-14 in the fourth and went on to win 77-66.
GBC big guns Clarke and James led the huskies with 18pts, 2rbs, and 11pts, 8rbs respectively. The Colts we're lead by their 3 captains Curic 17pts, 12rbs, 4stls,2blks Hagoriles 14pts, 4rbs and the reigning OCAA East Rookie of the year Paul Walwyn had 20pts and 9rbs. Josh McFarlane chipped in with 6pts, 8rbs, 7ast. High flyer Malique Hyde had 10 pts and 2 blks.
The meeting of coaches in this game was very emotional for both Coach Challenger and Coach Big John Smith. Mr. Smith was instrumental in the development of Trevor Challenger as he coached him when he was 14-16 years of age. Coach Challenger said "Growing up in a high-risk neighborhood was difficult. My only outlet was athletics! I loved to play baseball, volleyball, track and field and of course basketball. Coach smith taught me everything I knew about the game and more so about the intangibles like respect, commitment, and integrity. I never forgot those lessons and I continue to teach them today"
The Colts next game will be on Friday November 18 in North Bay versus the Canadore Panthers. Then as part of the swing trip they will face the Georgian Grizzlies on Saturday November 19 in Barrie
