SCARBOROUGH – Powered by two goals from Megan Simpson, the St. Lawrence Vikings defeated the Centennial Colts 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Centennial's AWC Turf Field. Megan Edwards was sensational in the Vikings goal, earning her first shutout of the season.
Centennial controlled the action early in the first half. They had their first scoring when Paige Solda took a long-range shot from outside the box. The Vikings goalkeeper, Megan Edwards was sharp and made the first save of the new season. Five minutes later, Edwards thwarted another shot from Solda to keep the match scoreless.
Kelly McLeod had St. Lawrence's best scoring chance near the end of the half as she broke in on Michelle Phillips in the Colts' goal. Phillips was able to knock the ball aside, leaving the match scoreless after one half of play.
The field looked slanted towards the Centennial end in the second half as the Vikings took it to them early. After a Vikings attacker was taken down in the box, they were awarded a penalty. #24 stepped up and buried a shot into the far right corner to give St. Lawrence a 1-0 lead.
Simpson added her second of the game just under a minute later. After recovering the ball from the restart, she hammered a shot from distance that snuck by Phillips to make it 2-0 for St. Lawrence.
Centennial made a valiant effort towards the end but Megan Edwards was too strong. In one sequence in injury time, she stopped three point-blank opportunities to preserve her clean sheet.
The Colts fall to 0-1-0 on the season as the Vikings improve to 1-0-0.
The Colts will return to action on Wednesday night when they will host the Fleming Knights at the AWC Turf Field.
