The Lancers women's soccer team put on a show for their Home Opener game against the Centennial Colts Saturday.
Playing for the first time on their newly renovated home field & in front of packed bleachers, the Lancers gave their fans something to cheer about.
Veteran Jodie Mitchell opened the scoring for the Lancers in the 33rd minute of the game. After getting taken down in the box, Mitchell made no mistake with a penalty kick that froze the Colts' keeper and put the Lancers up 1-0.
Despite being outshot 13-3 in the first half, keeper Hannah Baker kept the Lancers alive with multiple unbelievable saves while veteran defenseman Leah Den Hartough's experience showed, making a couple well timed saves of her own.
Another penalty kick in the second half had Mitchell coming up clutch for her team yet again, bringing the score to 2-0 Lancers. Less than two minutes later, the Colts were awarded a penalty kick in a nearly identical play that put the Lancers up 2. Colts' player Faith Anderson scored and brought the game within 1, then teammate Dallis McLean managed to get another one past Baker to tie the game at 2 with only 5 minutes left in the game.
With both teams fighting hard in the final minutes of the game, they came out with a 2-2 final score.
The Lancers now hold a 0-2-1 record heading into their next game on Friday, September 22 against the Algonquin Thunder.
The Colts will travel to Durham College on Wednesday, September 20 where they will face the Durham Lords.
