The Centennial Colts women's varsity volleyball team were in a major crisis in the first set. Too many errors on kill attempts and service errors had left the women down 21-12 to the George Brown Huskies in the set.

Colts head coach Matthew Cheung called a timeout and was confused by the team's lack of energy and resolve.

Whatever was said during the timeout, it woke up the Colts, and in a big way.

After losing the first set, Centennial (8-4) won the next three sets in dominating fashion Tuesday night, eventually winning in four sets (23-25, 25-12, 25-13, 25-15) against George Brown at the Athletic and Wellness Centre.

Brittany Somers led the Colts with 32 assists and eight service aces. Three other Colts players were in double figures, with Tryscelle Lin leading the team in points (16) and kills (14). Lizzie Bowers led the team with nine digs and had 11 kills to go with her 12 points while Emily Joe had 10 points on nine kills.

Centennial had dominated across the board, outpacing George Brown in kills (45-14), assists (35-9), and service aces (16-5). Somers had more service aces (eight) by herself than the entire Huskies team combined.

Cheung was puzzled by the lack of intensity and focus from his team in the first set.

"I don't know what happened," Cheung said. "It definitely looked like we weren't ready to play at all.  We had 20 errors in that set alone; you're not going to win many sets playing like that."

However, Centennial came roaring back to tie the set at 23 before dropping the next two games, in which the Colts head coach credited to execution and served as momentum for the rest of the match.

"When you finish a set strong, it's always a positive to take to the next few sets," Cheung said. "We didn't beat ourselves at the end."

Coach Cheung also noted that the dominance from his team in the last three sets was due to limiting their unforced errors.

"We forced them into trouble on the defensive end and we served very well," Cheung said.

Somers had four straight service aces at one point in the third set and Cheung admired her tenacity on the offensive end.

"Brittany's a good server," Cheung said. "She played well overall and showed up from the very beginning to the end."

The Colts head coach also raved about freshman Tryscelle Lin, who was just named the OCAA Female Volleyball Athlete of the Week and the CCAA Canadian National Athlete of the Week.

"She's definitely helped with our offense by putting balls away," Cheung said. "There's still things that she needs to work on but her attacking abilities are very helpful."

Centennial is unbeaten in the second semester, winning all three games to begin the second half of the season. Heading into Friday's matchup at Seneca College against the Sting, the coach emphasized on the mental game for his girls.

"They have a few new players and have a much better team now," Cheung said. "We have to serve well and not beat ourselves."
